On 14 November 2018, the completion of infrastructure works at the Željezno Polje was marked by the opening of the reconstructed road infrastructure, whose works were implemented within the project “safEarth” – “Transnational advanced management of land use risk through landslide susceptibility maps design”. The project in the area of Žepče municipality is carried out by the Development Agency Žepče in cooperation with partners, the Croatian Geological Institute of Zagreb, the Office of Geological Research of Podgorica and the Mining Geological Faculty of Tuzla.
The “safEarth” project was approved for funding under the cross-border program INTERREG IPA Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro 2014-2020.
Remediation work on the road infrastructure took place at 5 locations within the Željezno Polje, including construction of supporting walls, setting of gabions, lathes, setting of drainage pipes, drainage channels, rainfall collecting and road pavement at the locations where the works were carried out.
The works were carried out within two and a half months, and the contractor was the company “GP HELDOVAC” from Žepče.
The main objective of the project is to work together to solve the landslide issue in the region. In addition to road infrastructure remediation, the concrete benefits of this project will be provided to the Municipality through the development of the landslides maps (LSM), which will have practical application of information to local government and citizens for spatial planning, protection of people and property, planning of large investments and infrastructure, and through procurement of special equipment that will serve to collect data and track the situation of landslides in the field.
The project duration is 30 months and the total project budget is 974,695.50 EUR, of which the EU finances 85%, while 15% is co-financed by project partners.
